A framework for empowering learners with dispositions for learning
Pukengatanga is the Maori concept of the pursuit of excellence. With this comes the vision to build learners who ‘climb the mountain’ in order to gain skills, knowledge and understanding that supports them as learners. Along the way, they are supporting each other as well as teachers and whanau supporting the learner.
The idea is that we are all on the mountain together. As they reach the peaks of learning they are then tasked with the challenge of ‘going down the mountain’ to share their new learning.
From a Catholic perspective, it relates to many times in the bible where God has called people (e.g Moses, Jesus) up the mountain and sent them down with a task or a vision.
